The SHINING moment in my life
If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.
Roberts。

The SHINING moment in my life
Becoming a co-author of chapters in two world-renowned orthodontic textbooks is something I could have never imagined. What makes it even more special is that, before turning 40, I had the honor of contributing to “Graber Orthodontics: Current Principles and Techniques, 7th edition”—often called the Bible of Orthodontics—and to “Temporary Anchorage Devices in Clinical Orthodontics”, edited by Dr. Park.
This didn’t happen by chance. It was only possible because of two incredible mentors—(and of course, the amazing women who support us from behind the scenes)—who have given me unwavering encouragement and guidance throughout my journey: my teacher Dr. Chris Chang and his mentor, Dr. Gene Roberts (our beloved Grand-pa).
When Dr. Roberts visited Taiwan to see Dr. Chang, Chris and ShuFen kindly invited me to join them on a trip to Nantou. With deep gratitude, I carried both heavy textbooks all the way from Kaohsiung to Xitou, just to hand them to Dr. Roberts in person and ask for his signature.
Those two days in the forest, sharing thoughts and laughter with these two masters, will remain one of the most treasured memories of my life.
I was especially impressed by Dr. Roberts’ scholarly humility and his genuine curiosity about everything, and the father-son bond between him and Dr. Chang, which sometimes felt more like watching two playful kids tease and challenge each other—warm, humorous, and full of life.
As Newton once said:
“If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”
I consider myself even luckier than Newton—because I have two giants: Dr. Chris Chang and Dr. Roberts. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today (and of course, I’ll keep working hard to go further!).
One thing that truly moves me is this: in the entire Graber 7th edition, there are only three co-authors from Taiwan—Dr. Chris Chang, my classmate Dr. Eric Hsu(徐重興), and myself—and all three of us are from the Beethoven Orthodontic Center in Hsinchu.
This is without a doubt one of the most meaningful accomplishments in my 40 years of life. Honestly, it still feels like a dream—and yes, these two textbooks are definitely going to become Lin family heirlooms!
With heartfelt gratitude, I write this post to mark such a significant chapter in my journey. I’ll keep striving forward, doing my best to honor the teachers and mentors who believed in me.

P.S.
Yes—that moment at 47 seconds in the video! When Dr. Roberts gently patted my shoulder three times, I’m convinced those three pats were a direct transfer of 30 years of orthodontic mastery. Haha!
